Kenton Brass to perform

The Kenton Brass will perform the Stan Kenton Christmas Carols at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 in the McPherson First United Methodist Church, 1200 E. Kansas. Ave., McPherson. This year marks the 41st consecutive year that the Kenton Brass has performed in churches throughout Central Kansas.
It all began in 1974 when pianist and band leader Newt Graber, originally from Pretty Prairie, put together the group to play at West Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita. For many years the group was managed by Bryce Luty, retired director of Jazz Studies at Hutchinson Community College. This year the group will be managed and directed by Lisa Hittle, director of Jazz Studies at Friends University in Wichita.
Wichita-born Stan Kenton was one of the premier jazz and big-band composers of the twentieth century. His style was innovative, influential and controversial. His band’s sound was famously identified as the “Wall of Sound.”
The Kenton Brass consists of 22 brass and percussionists from the Wichita, Hutchinson and McPherson areas. There is no admission charge for the concert, but a free-will donation will be taken to benefit the McPherson Arts Alliance.
The concert is sponsored by the McPherson Arts Alliance, McPherson College and the McPherson United Methodist Church. For more information, please contact the McPherson Arts Alliance at mcphersonartsalliance@gmail.com or 620-241-6131.
